“Sanford Sundays” Week 3: Georgia Tops South Carolina in Dominant Fashion

The lights came on in Sanford Stadium for the first time this season, and it was certainly a beautiful sight. The Bulldogs certainly came out ready and for revenge against a South Carolina team who has won 4 out of the last 6 meetings against Georgia. From kickoff to final whistle, the red and black seemed to never take their foot off the gas as they pounded the Gamecocks by a final score of 52-20.

After many questions on the subject of quarterback Greyson Lambert and an inexperienced secondary after a lackluster experience in Nashville, there seemed to be no cause for concern Saturday night. Lambert, quite surprisingly, put all doubters to sleep by finishing 24/25 with 330 yards and 3 touchdown passes. His performance was so remarkable that a completion percentage of 96% broke an NCAA record, in which was held by former Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. Many Georgia fans are certainly hoping Lambert’s performance isn’t a fluke and he can continue to put up solid numbers consistently, and put his previous struggles behind him. For the secondary, it seems as if Jeremy Pruitt has mastered how to shut down diminished passing attacks, holding the Gamecocks less than stellar quarterback tandem of Perry Orth and Lorenzo Nunez to 84 total passing yards. That performance by the defensive back core was certainly one of the best we have seen during Pruitt’s tenure here in Athens, but the question remains, can he do it against a top tier team in Alabama in the coming weeks?

Georgia’s running back core operated as usual Saturday night as not only Nick Chubb being up to his usual tricks, but I feel as if Georgia has found a legitimate force of a 1B back in Sony Michel, due to his size, athleticism and versatility to play as a slot receiver, Michel’s versatility was shown Saturday as he finished with one rushing touchdown and two receiving touchdowns. Unsurprisingly, Chubb finishes with 159 yards and two scores in the clobbering of South Carolina. Week after week these running backs continue to show those involved with college football that they rank near the top in the nation, and can be a vital part of Georgia becoming serious contenders.

Saturday’s blowout gives Georgia fans a sense of excitement as there’s a feeling that the 2015 campaign could be a special one. This beat down of an SEC foe was the first one I could remember by such a drastic margin in a very long time. However, lets not get too far ahead of ourselves here as we must see how Georgia fares against an elite opponent in Alabama in only two short weeks. Until then, Georgia gets a bit of a breather as Southern University comes to town this coming weekend. I expect this game to be an opportunity to pad stats, get the reserves a good share of reps, and use as a type of bye week. The biggest issue in these type of games however is injuries, the Bulldogs must use caution this weekend to keep everyone healthy.

Georgia vs. South Carolina Preview

We now reach a point in the season where we see whether certain teams are pretenders or contenders. This is certainly the case for the Dawgs as we face a formidable opponent with a lot at stake.

After narrowly escaping a potential stumble game in Nashville, questions still remain pertaining to the quarterback position. The Dawgs will send out Greyson Lambert for his third consecutive start. I believe his leash will be short, as we saw a sloppy performance with some boggling decisions against Vanderbilt. Richt should not give him much wiggle room and be open to using Ramsey or Bauta as necessary. The quarterback play will definitely be a key to victory vs. South Carolina and the “Head Ball Coach” this weekend.

The running back tandem of Chubb and Michel should be able to produce as usual for Georgia this Saturday. We are beginning to see how vital a healthy Sony Michel is to the offense. His size and athleticism have helped him play to his full potential, leading to team success. I believe South Carolina will have a focus on stopping the run game, due to our weakened passing attack. However, I would believe Richt and Schottenheimer will unload the playbook some more after using a more “vanilla” offensive approach during the first two games.

On the other hand, South Carolina will be giving former walk-on Perry Orth his first career start after Connor Mitch suffered a separated shoulder against Kentucky last weekend. Therefore, I think he will sense some pressure as he enters a hostile environment in Athens. Along with placing pressure on a young and vulnerable quarterback, Georgia must be able to contain running back Brandon Wilds and potent offensive star Pharoah Cooper. This tandem has proven to be deadly for Georgia throughout the years, but this seems to be all South Carolina has at their disposal this season, and I expect Georgia defensive stars Jordan Jenkins and Leonard Floyd to do a good job of containing their threats.

I think the media has gotten carried away with the discrepancy between Georgia and South Carolina. The two teams are more evenly matched than you may think, with experienced coaching and stars on both sides of the ball for each squad. However, following keys to the game and producing offensively, I believe Georgia will come out with a 10 point win and leave the worry of Steve Spurrier’s antics behind them.

Despite the prediction of a win, a loss could turn Georgia’s season around for the worse and potentially lead to a subpar campaign, due to lessened confidence and increased vulnerability. Of course if this were to happen, Mark Richt’s seat would become warmer, and I think Georgia could be on the lookout for a new coach. This makes Saturday’s game vital as it is expected for Georgia to take care of business against a declining SEC foe.

“Sanford Sundays” Week 2: UGA Rolls Over Louisiana-Monroe 51-14

It certainly was beautiful to tee it up Between the Hedges, and the Dawgs certainly didn’t disappoint in their 2015 season debut. After being shut down in the first series of the game, it was all systems go from there, as the Dawgs rolled by a score of 51-14.

Coming into Week 1, there were many questions about newly named starting QB Greyson Lambert. Somewhat surprisingly, he looked as solid as he could have been, finishing with 141 yards, 2 TDs and no interceptions. Lambert’s opening campaign was highlighted by accurate touchdown strikes to TE Jeb Blazevich and WR Malcolm Mitchell.

Also on the offensive side, the stud running back tandem of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel didn’t disappoint, highlighted with a 120 yard performance capped off with two trips to the house from Heisman hopeful Chubb. A welcoming sight to see Saturday afternoon when a crowd of 92,746 came to their feet as RB Keith Marshall returned to action after numerous injuries throughout his developing UGA career. He seemed as if he can be a big offensive threat if healthy, as he finished with 2 TDs vs. ULM.

Defensively, the Dawgs looked stout inside as Leonard Floyd and Lorenzo Carter look much improved from last season. The questions however remain in the secondary, as the Dawgs show they have talent but the inexperience could be costly as the core is filled with underclassmen.

Unfortunately, for the fans in Athens on Saturday, the fun was cut short as the game was called in the midst of a second lightning delay with 9:54 remaining in regulation. Head Coach Mark Richt says the coaches and athletic directors of the respective universities decided to end play early “solely due to player safety”. It seems as if it was the right call, as their was little purpose to wait through a potentially lengthy delay when Louisiana-Monroe was facing a 37 point deficit.

Vanderbilt Preview

Next Saturday, the Dawgs head to Nashville to face the Vanderbilt Commodores, who seem to be headed to the cellar of the SEC yet again. The ‘Dores are coming off of a season opening 14-12 loss to Western Kentucky. Therefore, with Vanderbilt dealing with an inexperienced offensive line and a lackluster defense, I expect the ‘Dores to be under pressure constantly and for Nick Chubb and the crew to go to work and cruise in Nashville and head home to begin a crucial stretch of games.
